Day two at comic con was a little overwhelming, to be honest. There was a lot going on, but looking back, it probably wasn't as good as the first day. We got there fairly late, just after noon, because some members of the party feel like sleep is a critical part of a daily routine, instead of a twice-weekly thing. Regardless, we got there just in time to see the registration line (for pre-registered people, they were sold out of on-site tickets) turn the corner outside the building onto the next street. It was a little ridiculous, but regardless, we'd already gotten our passes the previous day.
The day was mostly spent bouncing between more Delves (we did two), Scars of Mirrodin Drafts (we did one, single elimination, I got paired against Pop round one, disappointingly enough), and watching some surprisingly good Starcraft 2 matches. We saw the tail end of the first semifinals round: drewbie vs Fenix, in which Fenix really did a great job of keeping his troops in very aggressive positions to constantly threaten a number of attacks. We also saw the full four games of HuK vs QXC, my two favorite Americans. I was nominally rooting for HuK – as was most of the crowd – but QXC managed to win it in four extremely well played games. Game three is probably going into the books as one of the best high-level games that's been done since release. It ended up being just over 45 minutes long, and almost completely mined out Scrap Station, which is no mean feat. With the quality of play that we saw, it was a shame that both of them couldn't advance to the World Championships in Cologne, but QXC deserved his wins for absolutely phenomenal play all around, including the best harassment via drops that anyone there had seen thusfar.
Overall, despite being there longer today, there was a definite feel of “been there, done that.” I'm starting to realize that the sub-par panels at NYCC is really a weakness that I hadn't expected to be there, especially in comparison with Connecticon. At CTCon, you bounce from one panel to another, with little to no breaks in between, and spend all the rest of your time in the dealers' room or artists' alley. At NYCC, it seems like the showroom is the big event, with 3 or 4 things floating around to do if you've got time to kill. It just seems much less structured, and not nearly as strong a showing as I'd expected.
I'm absolutely exhausted though, and we've got one more day at the Con tomorrow. We're just about going solely to watch Fenix vs QXC for the finals, and to cash in our delve points, then take one last swing around and see if there's anytthing worth buying last-minute. I doubt I'm finding anything, but again, worth looking at the least.
I'll let you all know how it goes, and once again, we're back to a normal pre-midnight posting schedule starting on Monday with the Picks of the Week from last week. (Haven't had a chance to do it since Bones only aired on Thursday, and the usual Friday slot got eaten by NYCC.) I'm also going to continue the Wrath Retrospective series with the top 10 tanking encounters, as well as reviews of a few movies that I plan on seeing this coming week (as long as I can get my hands on them.)
Have any of you guys gone to Cons in the last year? What was your favorite part? What could be done better? Would you go back the next year? Leave a comment and let me know!
